As my ancient family motto attests, all aspects of our daily lives are "Auxilio Dei" - by the help of God.

Dusk in America... Dawn of Something Better
A friend rightly said yesterday that "no matter what happens with the election, we are citizens of Heaven first." While we must continue to participate in public life and try to exert our influence for the common good, it is clear that we cannot place our hope in elections to fix what is ailing the world. I'm really not sure that people who value objective truth and eternal values will actually have a chance to see many future elections fall their way again. It seems less and less likely, as evil presents the illusion of being inevitable in our time. However, now more than ever is the time to be courageous men and women of faith in Christ. Nowhere is that more essential than in our own homes. Husbands and wives, father and mothers, sons and daughters, brothers and sisters... in these relationships we will find the hope for the future of humanity. Instead of being down on America (I will never fail to tell my kids what a great country it once was, in hopes that it can be again), I encourage you to make your families into sanctuaries. You alone are responsible for first knowing, and then fostering what is good and right in your own homes. No one else is to be trusted with this task! It is not to be left to our pastors, our schools, our communities, and certainly not our government. When and where these are faithful to God and His Word, they are a help to us, but a Godly atmosphere in our families is primary. If we have that, nobody can take that away. We may become martyrs in the process, because we will need to die to our selfishness, our pride (people will call us crazy... you might be calling me that right now!), or even our lives if necessary. If you are down about the election and seek an answer to the way out of this mess, look no further than the family that lives with faith, hope, and love in Christ. And if we are fortunate enough in this life to meet others who are just as committed to the sanctuary of the family, let us band together. We not only form the Body of Christ, but His very Heart, and His Heart is an infinite source of grace that can and will emanate from our families - offering the only cure to our society's ills. Be strong, faithful, committed leaders of your families - then sit back and watch what God does through you.
